  1. A Guide to the CD-ROM version of Word Munchers™.

  3. The version of Word Munchers on this CD-ROM is a fully functioning version of the product. To operate correctly, it must be run from an “write enabled” medium. Since a CD-ROM is “read-only,” you must first transfer the Word Munchers files to a hard disk or floppy disks.

  5. If you will be using Word Munchers on a black and white Macintosh, transfer these files:

  7. Word Munchers
  8. Word Config
  9.  
  10. If you will be using Word Munchers on a color Macintosh, you should transfer those files and:

  12. Word Color.
  13.  
  14. For best color results, set the Monitors control panel  to display 256 colors.
  15.  
  16. To access the Management Options, you will need to enter a password. The default password is: logos.

  29. Welcome to Word Munchers™
  30.  
  31. Word Munchers is an exciting, popular educational game designed to help children practice their skill at recognizing the vowel sounds in words.  Players move a Word Muncher through a grid, instructing it to eat words containing a target vowel sound.  To begin playing, simply follow these steps:

  33. Step 1:    Word Munchers has two disks—the Program Disk and the Color Disk.  If you have two disk drives and are using a Macintosh® with color capabilities, insert both Word Munchers disks.

  35.     If you have just one disk drive or are using a Macintosh without color capabilities, insert the Word Munchers Program Disk.

  37. Step 2:    Double-click on the Word Munchers icon when it appears in the Finder window.

  39. Step 3:    When the Word Munchers intro screen appears, click the “Play Munchers!” button in the lower-right corner of the screen or press either the Return or the Enter Key.

  41. Step 4:    You’re now ready to play the game.  Here are the most important points and rules to keep in mind:

  43. •    The object of the game is to “munch” as many words as you can that contain the target vowel sound listed at the top of the screen.  The more correct words you munch, the more points you earn.  Can you earn enough points to enter the Word Munchers Hall of Fame?

  45. •    To move the Muncher, click in the cell you want it to move to. 
  46.  
  47. •    To eat the word in that cell, click in that cell a second time.
  48.  
  49. •    You earn points every time you munch a correct word—that is, one that contains the target vowel sound listed at the top of the screen.

  51. •    If you munch an incorrect word, you lose a Muncher.
  52.  
  53. •    You must avoid the Troggles when they appear.  Troggles eat Munchers.  If you run out of Munchers, the game ends.
  54.  
  55. •    Once all the correct words have been eaten, the screen is cleared and another round of play begins.
  56.  
  57. •    When you’re ready to end the game, pull down the File menu and select either “End Game” or “Quit.”
